More Slides on M-Delphi Card Sorting

Thank you to everyone who was at the DC Chapter UPA meeting last night. Here are the slides from my presentation on Modified-Delphi Card Sorting. They are a little more detailed than the presentation I did for the IA Summit 2007. Look forward to the IA Institute process grant report which should be out around June 1.

Comments and questions are welcome.

DC Chapter UPA Meeting

I will be at the May DC Chapter UPA meeting this Thursday (May 24) to talk about Modified-Delphi Card Sorting.

Abstract:

The Delphi method is an interactive forecasting technique that incorporates the dialectic of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis to reach an unbiased consensus from a group of experts or users. It has been successfully applied to interviewing techniques and has the potential to be applied to card sort methods. This adaptation could allow card sorting exercises to be done with fewer participants and may yield more reliable results. This session will introduce the Delphi method and show how it can be applied to card sorting. We will also discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of this approach and of other variations on card sorting.

IxD/DC-IA Happy Hour

Thanks to Jared for hosting a great happy hour last night at Heritage India (strong drinks, great food). A lot more people than I expected showed up, but it was a great chance to catch up with people I have not seen or talked to in a bit. It is always a good time to go out and meet up with the rest of the community. Cheers!

Train Delay

Bomb threat at Union Station… the adventure begins before we even leave.

Welcome to D.C.

Pittsburgh! Baltimore! Trysil!

Justin and I were in Pittsburgh this weekend for some family things. My little brother and his wife were in town so we all went out to an ‘interesting’ dinner with my dad. Adam O had his annual 4th of July weekend party which I stopped by. I got to see a lot of people I haven’t hung out with in a while, so that was cool. HOPE 2k6 will be another reunion of the Pittsburgh geek crowd and will be a good time. I actually managed to get some sun from being outside and all that, going to a bunch of picnics.

Monday morning we got some lunch and drove back down to Maryland so I could catch my flight to Oslo. I had never flown out of Baltimore before (DCA and IAD are closer) but my flight was significantly cheaper from there. BWI is a sorry looking airport. Its not tiny, but its not big either (Pittsburgh International is larger). Most of the airport is under some kind of renovation plan — the concourse I flew to Newark from was scheduled for renovation beginning next month.

Norway. Yes, I made it alive. Its warmer than I expected, and a ton of bugs. A few things about what I’ve seen so far: lots of natural beauty (tons of ‘green’ — trees, fields, water, etc.), quaint, and freaking expensive. Stuff costs twice as much in Norway to start with, and given a suboptimal exchange rate with the US dollar — I think I paid 4$USD for a soda today. Trysil, the area the KDE 4 Core meeting is being held, is a beautiful area. The (three hour) bus ride here was scenic (while I was awake), reminding me of a mix of Pennsylvania farmland and Canadian forestry. The sunlight does weird things here, I have a picture taken of the landscape around midnight — and it is around 0300 and the sun is getting brighter.

Tomorrow I hope to get some things with the HIG organized for discussion, there are also various library issues which need to be brought up and discussed how and when they will be fixed. I’m not as familiar with the libs, so it may take a little time to get enough background information before the actual discussion begins :)

Oh, and Germany lost to Italy — so sorry Coolo
