KDE User Research Profiles: Okular

March 31st, 2008  | Categories: Design, General, KDE/Kubuntu

This week’s project pick to complete their user research profiles is Okular.

Okular

The Okular User Research Profile (OURP) has already been copied over to techbase. Okular also has the advantage of having a long-term relationship with a usability specialist (thanks Florian!) who can help them with generating the user groups and profile data.

Other project updates

Although the Plasma team has only copied the PURP and not yet worked on it, they’re starting to think about user research. Last week we began an interview activity to help begin examining user types within Plasma. I hope to get most if not all of the interviews completed by the upcoming Plasma sprint. This information will be helpful in further user research discussions which I hope are on the schedule for the sprint (*hint* *hint*).

    Hi Celeste :)
I wonder how much influence do You have on Oxygen Team as an usability expert, but maybe You could think about something new for save/save as icons. I know that diskette is there for historical reasons, but today in terms of usability it’s kind of awkward :)
PS Thank You for Your great work!

Well maybe it’s just me - having grown up with computers using even bigger as the depicted diskettes :).

I’m perfectly comfortable with this symbols, even if I haven’t saved anything to a diskette for years.
I think these symbols are kind of universally accepted, and any change must offer a really good new symbolism in order to be not too irritating.

Yeah, for us it’s quite natural, because we are used to it. But think about people who have just bought their first computer and have never seen a real diskette ;)
I don’t know for how long, but Tango icon set doesn’t seem to use diskette as save icon.

Diskette for save is perfecly fine in my opinion. arrows pointind to hardrives are …. download!!?hee update…! get harddrive!? (btw many users never seen an internal harddrive)… those diskette icons ar long passed the importance of the actual device.
People more and more recognize the diskette for the save symbology rather than for the device itself, its a good thing IMO.

Yeah, there are lot of symbols/icons out there which don’t have a “pictural” meaning, but are recognized simply because people are used to them (a “x” for closing window, a globe for WWW stuff and so on, and looking beyond computer technology, there are much more “meaningless”, but nevertheless recognized symbols).
As Nuno sayed, the diskette symbol has become such a symbol: People who have rarely seen a diskette in real life know that this is the icon for “save”.
Given that, especially with kioslaves, you can save on discs, harddiscs, USB-sticks, memory cards, webspace, FTP and so on, I fail to see an other unifiying symbol for this activitiy ;).

I don’t think that hard drive is good replacement for diskette. It’s even worse ;) Well, You’re probably right, we got used to diskette symbol and future generations will have too ;) Btw, nuno - You’re doing great job on Oxygen :)
