OU.o’s Season of Usability: GeexBox
A few months ago, OpenUsability.org announced a call for student participation — an opportunity for design students to volunteer their time to an Open Source Software project and gain real-world experience by working with a design and technical mentor (one of which is myself).
Today was the kick off meeting for the project I am mentoring: GeexBox, a Linux-based Multimedia system (similar to Microsoft’s Media Center or MythTV). The primary focus of the 2.x release is to redesign the UI so it is fun and easy to use. One of the challenges of designing an interface for this kind of system is the low resolution (must be clear enough to read on a TV) and limited input devices (a joystick of simple controller should be enough).
Nevertheless, here is our design team:
- Student design intern: Francesco De Rose
- OpenUsability design mentor: Celeste Lyn Paul
- GeexBox technical mentor: Benjamin Zores
Good Luck!

Shucks! I wish I had seen that call go out! This is exactly the sort of project that I have been looking for the home - we got rid of the television and entertain completely off a computer and a big monitor - i have been shopping the various projects, mythtv, geekbox, iTicket, Media Central in effort to find a nice system that is easily navigated. Good Luck!
