Design in the Wild: Scalpel-happy with ImageReady
This is from Bill, who was passing around some Friday afternoon office humor: European Commission Enlargement. I could see what the joke was as soon as I clicked on the link and the page began to load. If you clicked on the link, keep in mind I have decent DSL, so imagine what it would be like on a slow or lazy network.
Here is a screenshot of the original site. As you can see it is pretty graphical, with a soft gradient in the background and rasterized text as links:
Now, here is the same page with the images “turned off” via the Web Developer extension in Firefox:
Pretty scarey, eh? Now how about some document properties:
That’s right kids, there are 549 separate image files on that single page. This is a pretty good example when designers get a little scalpel-happy in Adobe ImageReady. Oi vey.

I simply cannot comprehend how anyone could think this was a good idea, let alone how a person who knows no better can get into such a job. Was this really easier to understand and implement than, say, having a single background image and a table containing text links? (Not that I would advocate the usage of table-based layout.)
Why not an image map? I haven’t seen image maps used in a long time; were they completely phased out of the HTML specs?
I am not sure if this is a material for the daily WTF site. (perhaps)
But it seems anyway a waste of internet broadband.

there are a lot of accessibility issues associated with image maps besides the fundamentally ugly code, inferior implementation for rendering, and waste of bandwidth
You’ve got to be kidding me. The way to do anything like this is with an image map, but even then, image maps aren’t exactly the neatest thing in the world for anyone to use. I don’t know why an image map, or anything like it, would need to be used here though because they’ve simply created a background image out of a load of smaller images for no apparent reason whatsoever. There are any number of ways of getting a background image on in. Crazy.
