South Park

South Park last night was hilarious. As with most episodes, they usually make fun of a current political or social situation. The current theme: Disaster, of course.

One of the most important points they make in the episode is the fanaticism of the media, specifically Fox News. The similarities were in the unfounded outrageous news reports of them divulging stories of “rape, looting, and cannibalism”, which “has not been confirmed, but could quite possibly be happening”. Of course the casulties were in the “hudreds of millions” to “tens of billions”.

Of course while everyone was a rioting mob you could hear people scream “We didnt listen!” in the same style as “They took our jobs!” (”Der Cherk Er Jerbs!”). FEMA got it hard. There was no innuendo of a joke for them, they were just flat out blamed, “Its FEMA’s fault”. Everything was there, from the oil fires, ex-Secretary Brown, global warming, George Bush hating [black] people, the blame game, and most of all everyone took responsibility in the end.

Has South Park always been this intelligent? I remember watching it in High School and thinking “this is fucking stupid”, but now its right up there with the Daily Show. I had this discussion with Justin last week, and he summed it up pretty well. His impression is when South Park first came one, theyre big drawing point was shawk and awe. They didnt care what they had to say as long as they created contraversy and a fan base. Now that they have exposure, experience, and fame, the producers can use the show to express their views instead of having to impress anyone.

That sounds about right to me. Regardless of how the show was, I like it how it is now.
