Squeak is a “media authoring tool”. Based on smalltalk, it offers an immersive and interactive programming environment. Its main audience is for education, it mentions the Montessori method in the way it decribes its immersive learning environment. Squeak has more than an educational goal, it can be used by anyone to create games or simulations through its user interface.

There is a demo of Squeak HERE which was recorded at O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference 2003. It supports many environments (including many *NIX).

Fisheye Evolution

I saw THIS on www.nooface.org. This interface is like the Mac OSX dock, in which focused items are larger than ones that are not in focus.

As cool as it is, the Mac OSX dock has some trial and error evolution to go through, and THIS java demo seems to be a good step in improving an application of this system. A specific change I like about the improvements on this menu is the lack of horizontal displacement when you bring an item into focus.

You may also participate in a 4 minute study comparing fisheyed and cascading menus.
